Protecting marine ecosystems from invasive alien species (IAS) by creating new value chains from their underexploited biomass feedstock.

HORIZON-MSCA-2022-SE-01: Valorization of Marine Invasive Alien Species a Pathway Towards the
Protection of European Marine Biodiversity: From Destructive Invaders to a
Source of Wealth.

01. New resources

New resources

Conversion of undervalorized IAS feedstock into new natural resources of bioactive compounds which can be applied not only to cosmetology but also to food and aquafeed supplements.

02. Economic benefits

Economic benefits

Creating a new type of fishery that will bring economic return benefits to the professional fishermen and maintain balance to marine ecosystems.

03. Productivity

Productivity

Improvement of the productivity of European business and industry with environmental, economic and social benefit.

PRINSUS in VALIAS

  • WP Leader of WP2 “Dissemination and Communication Activities”
  • WP Leader of WP4 “Recovery and formulation of valuable compounds-Toxicity and safety evaluation”
  • WP Leader of WP6 “Sustainability Assessment- Economic evaluation of valorization pathways”

Roles of PRINSUS

  • Dissemination and Communication Manager
  • Optimizing the recovery of valuable compounds from selected IAS through green extraction methods and their isolation in high purity, targeting to high yielding and selectivity.
  • Encapsulation of bioactive compounds using proteins and / or polysaccharide mixture derived from the selected IAS and other marine and/or non-marine sources as carriers, in order to increase their bioactivity and controlled release, developing stable and safe formulations. Implementation of sustainability assessment (environmental and economic) of final products.
  • Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to assess the environmental impact of processes and new products.
  • Socio-technoeconomic assessment of processes for final product development.

Valias

The project aims to create a WinWin solution via the exploitation of Invasive Marine Alien Species for both European fisheries and companies active in the sector of aquaculture, nutrition and cosmetology. VALIAS focuses on the development of schemes for the population management of IAS based on the idea of using IAS as feedstock for marine derived ingredients.
